Learn How to Grow Microgreens At Home

Growing your own plants especially your own food is so pleasing and satisfying. Seeing the popularity of baby vegetable greens, I thought of giving it a try from the comfort of my house.

So basically, microgreens are baby vegetable greens that fall somewhere between sprouts and baby leaf vegetables (which is approximately 1-3 inches tall). They have an intense aromatic flavour and concentrated nutrient content, and are very easy to grow either indoors or outdoors.

You can use it in salads, for garnishing or add it to your meat to enhance the flavours.

Here is a step-by-step method to grow your own microgreens.🌱

I used fenugreek seeds or methi seeds for the first time, it’s one of the easiest to grow and is easily available in every household.

Step 1

Take 1 or 2 teaspoon of methi seeds and soak it in the water overnight.

Step 2

Next day, allow them to sprout, just the way you sprout other lentils. I usually tie it in the cloth and keep it in the dark with a slightly heavy stone weight on it. I don’t know why I do that but it’s something I have seen my mom doing 😉

Step 3

By now, your sprouted seeds are ready for potting.

Step 4

Take a wide and shallow pot for this fenugreek seeds, Make 3-4 holes at the base of the pot for excess water to drain. I used an aluminium foil container which was broad and wide. Made holes using fork. You can even use, disposable plastic containers, you just don’t need a typical pot for this.

Step 5

Layer the pot with the soil or compost. Spread the seeds on the soil all over. I used potting soil from ACE, if your are in UAE you can get it online too by clicking on this link.

Step 6

Now, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.

Step 7

Water the pot regularly, the idea here is to keep the soil moist as much as possible

Step 8:

Have patience and see your microgreens grow; it would take 6-7 days (depending on the weather conditions), mine took almost 3-4 days, and I consumed it on the 5th day by adding it in the potato sabzi and kept few for salad. I kept it indoors in the corridor of my house.

You can harvest whenever you want, some prefer small leaves, some prefer big ones, but smaller the better and they taste so delicious.

Likewise you can grow your own microgreens using different seeds like mustard seeds, flax seeds etc
